Elliot Lake inquiry hearings in final weeks

After six months of hearings, the public inquiry examining last summer's mall roof collapse in Elliot Lake is closing in onthe end of the witness list.

The inquiry started by looking at the events prior totragedy from the design and construction of the mall to maintenance and engineering inspections.

Since the start of August, commissioner Paul Belanger has been hearing testimony about the rescue effort in the days after the Algo Centre Mall caved in.

Two people were killed in the tragedy.

The commission is set to hear from more rescue witnesses inthe final weeks of hearings, including members of the heavy urban search and rescue team from Toronto, officials from the Ontario Fire Marshal's office and the Ministry of Labour.

The inquiry will wrap up in early October when it hearsfromDalton McGuinty, Ontario's former premier.

The public inquiry was established in July 2012 by the Ontario government and has been underway in Elliot Lake since March.

It was created to report on events surrounding the mall roof's collapse on June 23, 2012, the deaths of Lucie Aylwin and Doloris Perizzolo, the injuries to others and the emergency management and response.
