Federal election 2015 Algoma, Manitoulin, Kapuskasing

This 96,000 square kilometre riding stretches from White River to Manitoulin Island and major population centres include Elliot Lake, Espanola, Kapuskasing and Hearst.

The NDP has held this traditionally Liberal riding since 2008

Conservative Andre Robichaud, Liberal Heather Wilson and NDPer Carol Hughes face off in a debate at the Elliot Lake Moose Lodge, moderated by Mayor Dan Marchisella.

This 96,000 square kilometre riding covers a huge swath of northern Ontario,stretchingfrom White River to Manitoulin Island.

Unlike most ridings, it doesn't include a major city, with the largest population centres being towns likeElliot Lake, Espanola, Kapuskasing and Hearst.

The Algoma-Manitoulin district has traditionally been a Liberal stronghold, with the region electing Grits since 1935, including former Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson.

But New Democrat Carol Hughes ended that streak in 2008, defeating incumbent Liberal Brent St. Denis by 5,000 votes. She held the seat in 2011, capturing 51 per cent of the vote.

During her time as MP, Hughes has also served as deputy critic for Aboriginal Health and as a member of the Aboriginal Affairs andNorthern Development Canada Committee.Before entering politics, Hughes worked as a regional representative for the Canadian Labour Congressand for Probation and Parole Services in Elliot Lake and Youth Justice Services in Sudbury.

A kinesiologist and ergonomic specialist from White River, he has decided to enter politics in order to promoteecotourism and transportation safety.

Raised in Kapuskasing, Robichaud studiedscience and human kinetics at theUniversity of Ottawa, before returning home to be the economic development officer for the Town of Kapuskasing.Robichaud describes himself as an avid hunter and fisherman and competitive golfer.

Wilson operated local tourism campWidgawa Lodge for 15 years, but has also worked for Laurentian University and the Manitoulin Health Centre.She holds a Bachelor's degree in English and women's studies as well as a master's degree in interdisciplinary studies,with a focus on gender equality and social justice. She has also been active with community groups in the Espanola area, including the public library, ski hill and A.B. Ellis Public School.
