There's a new option to travel between northern and southern Ontario.

FlixBus has announced it is expanding its service to Sudbury. The company said the new route will offer bus service between Union Station in Toronto and the Ontario Northland Terminal in Sudbury with several stops in between.

"We are very pleased to add Sudbury to the growing list of cities and towns in Ontario that FlixBus serves," Richard Szeri, senior manager of network planning for FlixBus said.

"Customers in and around Sudbury can not enjoy convenient access to Toronto, including Pearson International, and transfers to Niagara Falls and the USA. We aim for FlixBus to become synonymous with bus travel in Canada."

The company first started operating in Canada in 2022, focusing its service in southern Ontario.

Jonas Pearce, the government affairs and strategic partnerships associate with FlixBus, said offering more options for people to connect to southern Ontario from Sudbury is important to the company.

"A lot of people in the north travel to Toronto to take a plane for vacation to go see a play or sports event or even just business meetings or medical," he said.

"This is really going to help them because it's been an under serviced market lately since Greyhound left."

'Getting people to their destination on time'

Greyhound Canada announced in 2021 it was shutting down all bus service permanently. Earlier this year, Flix North America Inc., the Dallas-based entity overseeing operations for both Greyhound and FlixBus in North America, announced the "co-integration of both brands'booking platform, enabling a shared, extended intercity bus network."

Between Toronto and Sudbury, several stops will be made along the way, including Parry Sound, Port Severn and Waubaushene.

Pearce said the stops will be short for commuters.

"We really pride ourselves here of getting people to their destination on time," he said.

"To make that happen, we don't stop too long. It will just drop people off or pick people up from those areas so they can connect to Toronto or Sudbury as well."

The service launched this week.
