Flooding swamps New Sudbury roads, homes

Many people across northeastern Ontario spent Monday bailing out basements and running sump pumps.

In SudburyMondaynight, flood waters covered many streets in New Sudbury and the Flour Mill, including Notre Dame Avenue.

Stephane Venne said the intersection near his home was dry in the morning, but it became a small lake in the evening.

It didn't take long until it came ... over the whole road, he said.My basement's dry right now, but I'm getting worried. So, we'll be bringing up some stuff tonight."

Municipal officials said conditions on northern creeks and rivers would be watched very closely on Tuesday. A flood watch has been issued for Sudbury and a flood warning has been issued for North Bay and area.

Road closures

Sudbury police reported more road closures due to flooding Tuesday morning.

While a major section of Notre Dame remained closed, police have been re-routing traffic in both directions around Wilma Street and Cambrian Heights Drive.

Emergency vehicles are still able to access the centre lane for now, but if water levels rise any further, that too will be closed, police said.

Other road closures due to flooding:

• In the Penage area of Whitefish, River Road is closed to one lane.
• Dryden Road in Wahnapitae. There is a detour by Red Deer Road to Kari Road.
• River Road in Walden was closed all night. It now has one lane of traffic open and may be fully open after 10 a.m.
• Worthington Road between Aino Road and Cwethko Road in Walden is closed.

Due to dropping temperatures, police said people shouldtake extra care while driving, as the roads are slippery.
