Chapleau students told to stay home from school Thursday after 'threat'

The Algoma District SchoolBoard says itsChapleau JK-12 School will beclosedto all staff and students on Thursday,as the investigation continues intoWednesday'sthreat that was madeto the school.

"While we are hopeful to re-open the school on Friday, this will be confirmed for parents in a media advisory andthroughour messaging systemsometime lateron Thursday," a news release stated Wednesday evening.

Earlier in the day,ChapleauJK-12releasedstudents after a "hold and secure" order kept doors locked for most of the school day.

Ontario Provincial Police descended onthe school in Chapleau, Ont.,Wednesday morning, after school officials called.

They saida manwas making"threats" to the school.

A school in Chapleau was put on lockdown today after a man called threatening the school. Chapleau JK-12 was on a code RED lockdown for most of the morning as Ontario Provincial Police investigated. We heard the latest from Algoma District School Board.

The AlgomaDistrict School Board released a statement at 11 a.m., saying the school at 20 Teak St. was under a "lockdown" as of 9a.m.

John Stadnyk, director of education for the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board, said he got a call from the principal at Our Lady of Fatima elementary school saying there was a "threat"at the public high school.

The superintendent of the AlgomaDistrict School Board told him the same, Stadnyk said.

Although OPP told Stadnyk the threat was directed at Chapleau JK-12, Our Lady of Fatimaordered a "partial lock down - code green," as a precautionary measure.

"Everybody's safe," Stadnyk said,"the kids were kept in during the day at recess times. The principal is working this afternoon to make sure she communicates with parents about safe departures and transit home."
