Injured bear euthanized in New Sudbury Friday morning

Sudbury police shot an injured bear at 10 a.m. on Fridayafter receiving a call from a resident in New Sudbury on Danforth Street that a bear was possibly injured and had crawled underneath their deck.

When police and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry workersmoved the bear to an open area they found that its back legs were injured.

The MNRFbear technician asked the police to euthanize the bear. There was also a concern that an injured bear could be a threat to public safety,police said.

Police and MNRF are reminding people to follow thesesteps to discourage bears from coming into your neighbourhood.

• Only put garbage at the curbside in the morning rather than the night before garbage collection
• Remove bird feeders containing seed, suet, honey
• Clean outdoor barbecue grills including the grease trap underneath
• If you have berry bushes in your yard, ensure that you pick them as they ripen
• Remove pet food from outside
• Avoid putting meat, fish, and fruit in your composter
• Clean out garbage containers and recycle bins with a strong disinfectant
• Consider the use of bear resistant garbage cans
• Do not approach, feed or provoke bears
