Forget knitting and bingo: a70-year-old North Bay woman is breaking records and stereotypes with her new hobby.

Janice Shulman took up the sport of powerliftingabout two years ago. The weightlifting challenge seescompetitors try three tests of strength:abench press, squat, and a two-handeddeadlift.

Shulman said shehad never before competed in any sport, but her son himself an avid weightlifter convinced her to give it a try.

"He called me up and hesaid, 'Mom, you know, there are no records in your age and weight category in the province ... really, you just have to go out there and lift up the bar!'"

And lift the bar she did: Shulman now holds both provincial and national records though she remains humble about the achievements.

"It sounds much better than it is, becauseI'm really usually the only competitor in my age and weight category!"

With the help of coachJennifer Lavigne McConnell, Shulman will train for and represent Canada at the World Powerlifting Championships in Texas, USA, in June.

"I'm definitely much stronger," she said of her unique hobby. "And one of the best things is meeting all of these young people. Like, I'm old enough to be all of their grandmothers, and, there is competition, but everyone is cheering [me]on. It's an unbelievably good experience!"
