Kingsway hotel property sale approved by Sudbury council

The city of Greater Sudbury has found a buyer for the site of the old Kingsway Hotel.

City council approved a deal Tuesday to sell the lot after the eyesore was demolished earlier this year.

The city took the unusual step of taking over the abandoned property, with the hopes of selling the land for a profit. The gasoline-contaminated property was cleaned up and put up for sale.

Mayor Marianne Matichuk pushed for the city to take the unusual step in order to remove the building.

She even wanted to get personally involved in the demolition, by pushing a detonator or working a jackhammer, but they wouldn't let me on the site because of safety issues and I respect that."

The new owner of the Kingsway Hotel lot, as well as the sale price, won't be known until the deal closes.

"Now there's an opportunity for something new, Matichuk said.

I can't say anything until it comes out publicly, but it will, I'm sure, be something that will be good for the city."

The Kingsway Hotel lot was listed at $525,000. The final sale price won't be public until the deal closes.
