Laurentian University hikes tuition

Laurentian University maintains that it charges some of the lowest tuition fees among post-secondary institutions.

Many students atLaurentian University in Sudburyare paying more for their spring courses.

The school's board of governors raised tuition rates in Februaryafter the Ontario government gave colleges and universities permission to raise the rates by as much as three per cent per year for the next two years.

The amount of the increase at Laurentian varies across programs.

"What we offer at Laurentian is a very high quality education," the university's chief of staff Alex Freedman said.

"So in order to maintain that offering to make sure students get the best service they can, we need to make sure that we pay the fees, we need to make sure that we pay the bills obviously, and that we maintain salaries and everything else that goes into maintaining a university."

Laurentian has some of the lowest tuition fees in the provinceand it does its best to keep prices reasonable,Freedman said.

Students who need assistance paying for their educationcan apply for scholarships and provincial subsidies, he added.
