As students head back to class next week, Laurentian University in Sudbury is in the midst of a $50 million renovation.

The school is overhauling many of its buildings, labs and common spacesincluding a $2 million revamp of the cafeteria area.

Brad Parkes, executive director of the schools facilities services, said the 1960s-era universityhad to keep pace to be competitive.

Down in southern Ontario theres a lot of new buildings going up at the universities, so we do have to compete, sure, Park said.

  • The CBC's Megan Thomas went to campus to get the details:
Students will notice some changes this year as they return to Laurentian University. The school is overhauling buildings and common spaces.

One part of the renovation is already complete; the great hall officially opens on Wednesday.

The rest of the changes will take place over the next two years. Parkes said students will still have a place to learn during construction.

It's tight, but the registrar's office has been able to look at every nook and cranny we have, and they're making it work, he said.

Parks said construction is expected to wrap up by fall of 2016.
