The last act in Caleb Marshall's theatrical career hasn't been written yet.

Marshall, who has been at the helm of the Sudbury Theatre Centre for three years, is taking a "sabbatical" from his role as executive director to concentrate on family life, and creative endeavours.

"Running arts organizations any not for profit organization is a challenge in our current economic climate," Marshall said. "I think it's time for somebody with new burst of energy to take over for me."

Marshall said the timing is right, as the STC team has managed to strike a balance between being a performing arts centre and an arts presenter.

He also said the demands to runa centre carry their own pressures.

"It just felt like a time where handing over the reins to somebody who was more of a performing arts centre administrator...just seemed like it might be a good time," Marshall said.

Marshall took over as STC director from David Savoy in 2014. Previously he had been with Theatre New Brunswick.

  • An earlier version of the story incorrectly said Gerry Copeland would be taking over as interim artistic director.
