Out of the Cold Program now underway in Sudbury

The City of Greater Sudbury says the Out of the Cold Program will start Dec. 1.

The program will provide temporary cots and a warm, safe place to sleep for homeless and vulnerable citizens during the winter months.

The city said the program will provide services to people who are under the influence, although alcohol and drugs will not be permitted on site.

It will be located at 200 Larch St., and will be open between 8p.m. and 7a.m., seven days a week, until the end of March.

According to the city, the Elgin Street Mission has extended its operating hours to accommodate those who require warmth from the cold and will be open from 10 p.m. until 8 a.m. until the Out of the Cold program is up and running on Monday.

The Out of the Cold Program will be run in partnership between the city, the Salvation Army and the Red Cross.

I am very pleased that through partnerships with the Salvation Army, the Red Cross and the Elgin Street Mission, we are able to offer this service to our most vulnerable population, Catherine Matheson, general manager of community development with the city said in a release.

The city added it will continue to work with community partners to coordinate and enhance programs for vulnerable persons in the community.
