Two earthquakes are confirmed to have shaken parts of GreaterSudbury on Tuesdaynight shocking many people in the Minnow Lake and New Sudbury areas.

Earthquake Canadaconfirms two distinct events. The first earthquake happened at 9:06 p.m.and registered a magnitude of 2.8 on the Richter scale. The aftershock happened fewer than 10 minutes laterand registered a 1.8.

"It [was] a very small earthquake," said seismologistAllison Bent.

"There would be tens-of-thousands of these worldwide every day, just most of them don't happen in the Sudbury area ... Normally what we say about something like this: big enough to feel, but that's really it."

Bent confirmed the epicentre of both quakes was47 kilometres east of Sudbury about half way to Sturgeon Falls.

She said she couldn't point to a specific geological fault line as the active one.

"If there are earthquakes, in all probability there is a fault. But with these small earthquakes, and even with the bigger ones magnitude 4 and 5 they're happening several kilometres underground," she said.

"It's not like California where you can just go out and look, and there's the San Andreas fault."

Sudbury police have reported no injuries in connection with the quakes.
