A program is underway to make sure elderly people in Sudbury have the necessities they need to brave the cold.

The "Keep Seniors Warm" program teams seniors with volunteers who accompany them on a shopping trip for new winter clothing, like toques and coats.

City councillor Evelyn Dutrisac, who came up with the idea, said the idea of providing warmth for seniors goes beyond just clothing.

Shopping trip also provides a few moments of companionship for seniors, says Dutrisac

"I think that a lot of our seniors are alone, and don't have an opportunity to go out to the community, to go out to an event like this and feel like they're loved and that they're cared for."

"There's that compassion," Dutrisac said.

Each senior who benefits from the fundraiser gets $150 to go shopping for new winter gear.

Anyone who wants to contribute to the campaign can send their donations to 330 Marble Street.

Seniors who think they can benefit from the program are encouraged to sign up by calling 311.
