Sudbury's Rainbow Centre mall flood concerns customers

It was pouring inside the Rainbow Centre Mall after a water pipe burst. Water leaks at the mall have some people concerned about the building's safety. The CBC's Marina von Stackelberg spoke with a bystander and to a mall representative about the leaks.

A flood yesterday in an empty section of a downtown Sudbury mall has some worried about the building's infrastructure but mall administration says cold weather is to blame for the leak.

Water started gushingyesterday afternoon in an empty part of the building near the main entrance, where the oldQuizno'sSubs used to be. Management said the cause was a sprinkler pipe in the ceiling that froze and burst in the cold weather.

Nathan Fragomeni, who filmed the leakon his phone, said he's worried about the safety of the building's structure and says that's why he hasn't been going to the mall much anymore.

"I'm so used to seeing water in this mall. It's just a regular thing in this mall," he told CBC News.

DarrenWoodworth, senior vice-president of operations for the Rainbow mall, said he's not worried.

"There's no concerns at all from us. We're doing some capital projects and upgrades to the property that are planned," he said.

"We're in the second phase of rehabilitation."

Ongoing construction at the mall had nothing to do with the leakage,Woodworthnoted.

"With the -20 C weather, a sprinkler pipe in the ceiling space above the vacantQuiznosspace froze and popped at the joint elbow," he continued.

"It's a common thing that happens with you hit these sub-zero temperatures."
