Roland Bellaire, 49, dead after failed snowmobile stunt

A 49-year-old man is dead after trying to ride his snowmobile across open water in Bonfield, Ont., Sunday.

A 49-year-oldman is deadafter trying to ride his snowmobileacross open water in Bonfield, Ont., Sunday.

North Bay OPP said Roland Bellairewas trying the stunt known aspuddle jumpingoff of the government dock on Lake Nosbonsingaround 3 p.m.but failed to make it across the water.

Some people watching from shore managed to find a canoe and rescued him from the water. They brought him to shore and performed CPR until paramedics and volunteer firefighters arrived at the scene.

Bellaire was taken to hospital, where he later died.

"The North Bay OPP urges all snowmobilers to stay off of lakes and rivers as the ice conditions change very quickly and can be very unpredictable this time of year," police said in a statement released Monday afternoon.
