Shooting by Sudbury police officer leads to SIU probe

The Province's Special Investigations Unit has been called in to Sudbury to probe a police shooting on Kathleen Street Monday night.

The Province's Special Investigations Unit has been called in to Sudbury to probe a police shooting on Kathleen Street Monday night.

The SIU said, at about 11 p.m., a police officer stopped a vehicle as part of an unspecified investigation.

"There was an altercation between the officer and the driver of the vehicle and the officer discharged his firearm," said SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon.

"The 34-year-old man was arrested and taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to the shoulder."

She said theman was arrested and taken to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The SIU has assigned five investigators and two forensic investigators to probe the incident and has asked anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact the lead investigator at 416-622-2038 or 1-800-787-8529 extension 2038.

The SIU is an arms length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
