Skylar Dalyk murder trial: Forensic pathologist describes stab wounds

Jurors in a Sudbury murder trial have heard about stab wounds that 29-year-old Tim Lamothe suffered in December of 2013.

Skylar Dalyk is on trial for second-degree murder in his death, which police say took place outside the Algoma Tavern in Chelmsford.

Forensic pathologist Dr. Martin Queen testified Wednesday that it appears a common, single-edged knife was used in the stabbing of Lamothe.

He described details of two stab wounds on Lamothe's lower left side, just below the rib cage.

One stab wound was about 17 centimetres deep and cut upwards through a rib, and into the back of the man's heart, Queen said. The other stab wound cut through two ribs and sliced one of the main veins attached to the heart.

The pathologist said that, as a result, blood flowed out of the heart and into the chest cavity.

The judge and jury has heard that the two men were arguing over a debt when the stabbing took place.

Queen is expected to define the cause of death in further testimony.

Crown's first witness

Dalyk, 24, remained straight-faced as the Crown presented its case against him on Tuesday.

The Crown alleges Dalyk owed Lamothe a debt and that, on Dec. 12, 2013, Lamothe confronted Dalyk and a chase ensued.

The Crown told the court that Dalyk stopped running, then stabbed Lamothe in the chest twice.

The Crown's first witness was Eric Sanderson, the first police officer on scene.

Sanderson told the jury he arrived around 9 p.m. to find paramedics treating Lamothe's body.

Police searched for Dalyk all night.

Sanderson said Dalyk's father texted his son and told him to co-operate with police.

Dalyk was arrested in a park at 4 a.m. the following day.

The Crown showed photos of Dalyk's shoes, which appeared to show spots of blood.

It also showed photos of Lamothe's clothes, including a white t-shirt stained almost entirely red, with a hole in the left of the chest.

Lamothe's mother was in the courthouse holding a photo of her son.

She looked away when the t-shirt was shown.
