Sudbury adds diversity policy in hopes of attracting new people

Sudbury city council added a new diversity policy Monday night in hopes of attracting new people to the city.

Council votedunanimously Monday night to display a statement about its diversity policy developed by panel of citizens on its website.

The citizen panel, lead by Leonard Kim, developed the policy to guide the city in daily operations.

The statement says that Greater Sudbury is an inclusive community and is stronger through diversity.

Kim, who said he is often asked about the Sudburys diversity, thinks it will help attract the type of people the city needs.

What are people like in Sudbury? Kim said, repeating questions hes often asked.

Will they accept people like me?I look different, I'm Asian, or I'm Black, Are they going to accept me? Do they have the kind of food where we can make our ingredient?. If they don't, I'm sorry I'm not going.", Kim paraphrased."You've lost a doctor. You've lost a radiologist. You've lost a professional, you've lost a police officer.

Coun. Evelyn Dutrisac said she often works with newcomers to the city,

I think that it is extremely important that all our citizens feel that they are equal and there is dignity, equality, she said.
