Sudbury Daystarter: Police seek suspect in Hanmer hit-and-run

HIT-AND-RUN:Sudbury police are looking for a suspect in a hit-and-run case reported in Hanmer on Friday. Police said between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., a group of youths was walking on Heritage Drivewhen avehicle hit one of the them, sending that person flying onto the hood of the car. According to police, when the pedestrian fell off the hood, the driver left the scene. The vehicle in question is described as a grey four-door car.There is no word on the condition of the victim.

CAMPAIGNING: Now that all the major parties have candidates in place,Sudburyvoters can expect to see a lot ofcampaigningin the next few weeks. But, analysts say this election could look andsound a bit different than usual, as voters are casting either a government or opposition voteand voter turnout is traditionally lower in a byelection.

SUDBURY CITY COUNCIL: Ontario Ombudsman Andre Marin could soon return as Sudburys closed door meeting investigator. The new city council will vote tomorrow on who it wants to appoint to the job for the next four years. The previous council fired the Ombudsman nearly two years ago.

SMOKE-FILLEDPORTER FLIGHT: The Transportation Safety Board says a simple bearing is behind the problem that forced a Sudbury-bound Porter airplane to make an emergency landing late last month. Passengers noticed the cabin fill with smoke shortly after take-off. TSB's Don Ennssays a bearing in the engine failedallowing engine oil to get into an air compressor. Most highways have partial snow cover, with visibility fair at times this morning because of light snow around Sault Ste. Marie, Manitoulin Island,Sudbury and south of North Bay. As skies clear visibility will improve.
