Two 3.2 magnitude earthquakes rattle Sudbury area

Sudburians across the city felt the earth move Sunday night.

The ground started to shake shortly before 6 p.m.People from Naughton to Hanmer reported feeling the rumbling while sitting down to dinner or watching football some of them feeling two distinct quakes.

"Idid not feel anything ...but dogs barked twice, about 10 minutes apart," wrote one Sudburian on the CBC Sudbury Facebook page.

Earthquakes Canada confirmedthat two 3.2 magnitude quakes happened in the Sudbury area.

Sudbury police report the mines in the area were contacted, and reported no blasting at that time.

However, Vale spokesperson Angie Robson saidthe seismic activity was felt more than 7,000 feet underground at the Creighton Mine, and registered on their ground control system.

Small earthquakes are a fairly regular occurrencein the Sudbury area and are often mistaken for mining blasts.

In September 2015, there were two quakes of magnitude 2.8 and 1.8. In August 2014, homes were rattled by a 3.8 magnitude quake.
