Sudbury, Ont. jail disturbance under investigation

The province is investigating a disturbance at the Sudbury jail on Saturday afternoon.

The incident started when five inmates refused to comply with staff orders, said Greg Flood, who is the Ministry of Corrections and Public Safety.

Flood wouldn't say what the inmates refused to do, but did say this kind of incident is something staff members deal with as a matter of routine.

"[Inmates] do bring certain issues with them," he said.

"Things do transpire at our facilities. Situations do unfold, but again, given the excellent trained staff that we have and hard work that they put forward, they manage this on a day-to-day basis."

Flood said the incident ended after about two or three hours, and no one was hurt.

"We were able to negotiate a resolution to the situation," he said.

"The inmates have since been re-located to other institutions across the province."

Flood wasn't able to say whether this was connected to the hostage-taking at the Thunder Bay jail about a week ago.

Ontario correctional officers recently rejected a tentative three-year deal with the province.
