Sudbury motorsports track plans slowly gain traction

Plans to build a multi-million-dollar motorsports park in Sudbury have not exactly been speeding along since first being made public two years ago.

But,one thing that has changed is who is in the driver's seat.

The city is now more directly involved in the planning for the proposedtrack for drag racing, stock cars, snowmobiles and even drive-in movies.

Economic development director Ian Wood said whetherthis dream becomes a reality should be known soon.

"I think the next sixmonths or so will really tell the tale."

Wood said the focus right now is on reviewing four possible locations for the racetrack, including the Sudbury airport.

The Sudbury District Motorsports Association members were the ones who first got this idea moving.

Association president Don Lamontagne said local gear heads like him just have to be patient.

"I'm going to be probably just an old person coming out in my wheelchair to watch the racing, but it'll be fun. And it's going to happen, it'll just take time."

It will also take money. The project has been pegged at $17 million. While potential private investors have come forward, how many tax dollars will go into the race track is still a lingering question.
