Sudbury's Earth Day Festival celebrates a decade of 'green'

Sudbury's Earth Day Festival is celebrating a decade of community and environmentalism this weekend and organizers hope you'llbe inspired.

RebeccaDanard is the Executive Director of reThink Green in Sudbury, and is helping to organize the 10thannual event happening Apr. 25 at Sudbury Secondary School.

In an interview on CBC Sudbury's current affairs showMorning North on Thursday, Danardsaid people who attend can expecta "participatory festival".

"So there's going to be lots of workshops and events for people to actually get involved and do things during the day."

Danard said, weather-permitting, there will be a bike rodeo for kids anda wildflower planting workshop outside.

Inside, there will be workshops on green parenting, community solar energy and bee keeping.

Give back 'green'

Danard said while she feels Earth Day is important to recognize the world over, she thinks it's a particularly important day in Sudbury.

"It's a chance for us to bring together our community, she said. "It's also really a chance for a lot of the member groups that we support to come and show what they've been doing."

As for what she hopes people take away from the festival, Danard said she wants people to think about how they can make a difference.

"I think it would be a challenge.I'd love to see everybody who comes out to the festival be able to contribute a volunteer hour. Think about something you can do in your life to become more green, and get involved with your community," she said.

The festival is open to the public andruns from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Organizers are hoping to collect a $5 donation per person and$10 per family, but Danard stressed no one will be turned away.
