The high-stakesspelling competition for children ages six to 14 is happening April 10.

Jana Bolton is theSudbury chapter president of the Spelling Bee of Canada and told CBC News she has two youngsters of her own taking part in the event.

She said children who sign up receive a practice list of 400 words to study and memorize. There are four practice sessions available to help get them prepped for the big competition.

"I do love to spell, myself, and I love to see the kids get up and take on the challenge," said Bolton.

Winners in each division receive money, with$1,800 in cash prizes up for grabs.Local winners from Sudbury go on to the provincial competitionin Toronto in May.

Listen to the complete interview with Jana Boltonand hear a few callers try to spell a word in an impromptu CBC Radio spelling bee competition.

With spell checking or auto-correct features today, knowing how to spell a word seems less crucial than in the past. Not so for participants in the Sudbury Regional Spelling Bee. Jana Boulton of Spelling Bee Canada told us more about the upcoming bee.
