One of the last remaining iconic city landmarks from Sudbury, Ont.'s old days is getting a makeover, as the water tower that overlooks the downtownis being painted.

Owner Dario Zulich saidthe repair and restoration arepart of the commitment he made when he bought it in 2016.

Project leaderTim Laderoutesaidpainters are up there now, covering the rust on the top of the tower with a special product, and he saidthe work will be done in sevento 10 days, with more touch-ups planned for next year.

"This is Part 1 of a phased approach to restoring it. There is more to come next year," said Laderoute.

Zulich bought the tower in 2016, and has said in the pasthe wanted to put a huge red goal light on the towerthat would signal whenever his junior hockey team scored a goal during its games.Zulich saidthat may still be in the plans, but he also wants to enhance the area with some new lighting, and possibly add a community park and observation area.

"The painting we wanted to start now, to take advantage of the remaining good weatherand in conjunction with the 38-unit housing development on an adjacent pieceof land,"said Laderoute.

Asked about restoringthe lettering that spells out "Sudbury,"Laderoute saidhe's waiting to hear from the contractor about whether that can be achieved in this phase of work.
