A new war memorial in Coniston is in pieces after vandals struck on the weekend.

Kirk Langdon, who worked with the Community Action Network to put the memorial in place on a visible corner of Centennial Park, spotted the damage on Sunday.

Granite benches werewrenched from moorings, broken and dumped in a reflecting pool.

Langdon saidhe's not sure who would do such a thing.

"You can't pinpoint who's behind it. You, a lot of people, it's kids, it's this, it's that," he said. "But you just hope that it's someone who has hadtoo much to drink and didn't really know what they were doing. You hope it's not malicious."

The memorial will be repaired and acommemoration to honour the war dead will go ahead as planned at the end of the month, Langdon said.

"The flagpole's up. We got everything finalized and then, yeah, this happens, we're going to push on for sure and get it done before [May 30]. We'll have it looking as good as new, anyways."
