Webbwood men banned from hunting moose for 15 years

Two men from Webbwood have each been fined $1,500 and are not able to hunt for moose for the next 15 years.

The Ministry of Natural Resources says Michael and Perry Caverly pleaded guilty to hunting moose without a licence.

The MNR said the men also made a false statement to a conservation officer.

In court, the two men testified they were hunting for deer north of Webbwood last November, and shot a cow and bull moose.

The MNR said Perry Caverly did not have a valid moose licence, and Michael Caverly had one valid licence for a calf. The men asked a member of a First Nationto claim the moose were harvested under traditional hunting rights.

Justice of the Peace Monique Mecheske heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola, on Jan. 9.
