The Thunder Bay and District Humane Society says it's preparing to close its doors.

The organization is currently taking in $15,000 less than it needs each month to meet its financial obligations. Unless there's an infusion of cash, board member Brenda Remus said the shelter will be shut down at the end of next month.

"This is serious," she said. "We've made our payroll this week, but our next payroll is questionable if we don't get some emergency funding."

Remus said if the Shelter does close, the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will relocate any cats and dogs still in its care to other shelters in the province. The Humane Society is appealing to the city of Thunder Bay and the provincial government for help.
