Ashley Potson, 32, charged with 2nd degree murder in Thunder Bay County Fair homicide

Police in Thunder Bay, Ont., say a 32-year-old woman has been charged with murder in connection with a recent homicide investigation involving a woman who was found dead near the Landmark Hotel on Tuesday.

Police in Thunder Bay, Ont., say a 32-year-old woman has been charged with murder in connection with a recent homicide investigation involving another woman who was found unresponsivenear the Landmark Hotel on Tuesday.

Police charged Ashley Mary Potson of Thunder Bay with second degree murder Wednesday evening. Potson also faces charges of breaching court orders.

"We don't have direct information about gang activity," Det. Sgt. Tracy Lewis said when questioned whether that may have been a factor. "Motive is determined by, again, by the follow-ups and interviews."

"The arrest is made on the reasonable probable grounds of what's been provided so far."

Lewis said that, even though an arrest has been made, police continue to work the case.

Police said a passerby called 911 when they saw anunresponsive woman on a bike path in the County Fair area on March 19, just before 1 a.m. The passerby, Devin Galloway, told CBC News the victim appeared to have been seriously assaulted.

Lewis said she couldn't confirm those types of details, saying that police are waiting on the results of a post-mortem, which is scheduled to take place in Toronto.

"We're going to follow our path of the process that we do, and that's including working with the coroner's office."

Police said they also won't release the victim's identity until the autopsy is completed.

Potson appeared in court on Thursday. She remained in custody.

Police said they continue to hold the scene and are asking the public to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
