First Nations leader hopes education funding comes soon

Parliament unanimouslypassed a motionMonday night declaring that all First Nations children have an equal right to high quality education.

That's good news for Terry Waboose, the deputy grand chief in charge of education for the Nishnawbe Aski Nation.

Waboose said he's pleased to see the recognition of the inequity in funding for First Nations education.

"And I think we'll hopefully we'll see something soon in the next budget that finance minister Flaherty will deliver hopefully soon," Waboose said.

He noted recent reports have consistently said that aboriginal education is underfunded.

Currently First Nations schools receive about half the funding per student that provincially-funded schools get.

The motion isn't binding on the government, but signals its intentions.
