Forest fires near First Nations no longer immediate threat

Fires that broke out near three northern First Nations on the weekend were effectively fought by Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry fire fighters.

Forest fires that broke out near three northern First Nations on the weekend wereeffectively fought by Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) fire fighters.

In an update released on Sunday,the MNRF says a fire in the Nipigon District near Eabametoong First Nation (also known as Fort Hope) was declared outand another fire in the same district near Kasabonika First Nation is being held at 2.5 hectares.

In the Red Lake fire district, a 0.2 hectarefire near Sandy Lake First Nation is under control.

The ministry says there were no new fires on Sunday and the forest fire hazard is low for most of the region with precipitation in the forecast for the next few days.
