More funding on the way for flood victims

Hundreds of homeowners and tenants who made claims to Thunder Bay's Disaster Relief Committee can expect more money.

The Disaster Relief Committee has announced that after a lot of discussion with the Ontario government individual files will be readjusted to reflect the higher costs of construction in Thunder Bay.

The new numbers mean some claimants could get another $1,000 compared to what they were originally quoted.

Committee chair Wayne Fletcher said the revisions are for construction costs only including the higher prices of materials.

"We have to go through each rebuild," he said. "A specific example may be sheet rock, for instance."

Fletcher said he also expects some good news in the coming weeks for the amount homeowners can claim for losses of personal property.

He said the cost of replacing items like appliances or furniture could go up, as well as the amount eligible for personal items, such as clothing.

"I think the big thing that we're really glad to see is that it's closer to what they were submitting as their costs or their estimates," Fletcher added.

The committee said it will make every effort to have the files amended and final payments mailed out by the end of June.
