Orders issued after death of Thunder Bay worker

The Ministry of Labour has issued orders to the company that employed the victim of Monday's fatal industrial accidentinThunder Bay.

City police said a 31-year-oldworker at a Thunder Bay Country Club construction site was hit by a dump truck that was backing up at about 1:30 p.m.

The Thunder Bay manwas taken to theHealth Sciences Centre where he succumbed to his injuries. His name has not been released.The ministry said he was a worker employed by LTL Contracting.

All work was stopped at the site of the condominiumbeing built by Design Build Thunder Bay.

Spokesperson Matt Blajer said, for construction to resume, LTLContracting will have to meet orders and conditions.

"One is that vehicles shall not back up when their view of the intended path is obstructed, until they are assisted by signallers ... and we have to be satisfied that the signallers know what they're doing," Blajer said.

Another condition is that no machinery should be operated in reverse unless there's no practical alternative.As well, Blajer said, LTL will have to develop a plan on how it will back up any vehicles or equipment when it has to do so.
