Rain giving the northwest a soggy start to June

Extended periods of rain have caused washout concernsin Shuniah Township. Shuniahreports that Eldorado Beach Road is closed easterly to O'Connor Point, Scott Drive is closed, and other roads are being monitored.

To the west, the Lake of the Woods Control Board says parts of the Rainy River drainage basin upstream of Lake of the Woods have received 75 to 125 mm of rain over the past few days.

The Board advises shorefront property-owners on Lake of the Woods and in the English River and Winnipeg River systems to monitor conditions through its website.

Elsewhere in the region,Upsala recorded 42 mm by this morning, and Fort Frances recorded 36 mm.

Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson said the department has issued a special weather statement for most of the region that says an additional 20 to 40 mm is expected in some areas before the weather system moves through on Tuesday.

However Coulson noted there will be a break in the rain on Wednesday and Thursday.

There should be some pretty nice weather for Wednesday and Thursday for TBay and the northwest, [with] temperatures in the low 20 C [range] for daytime highs, and that is where we should be at this time of year, he said.

Then another system is forecast to move in for Friday and into the weekend. At this point [were looking at] spotty shower activity."

The Thunder Bay Border Cats baseball game against the Rochester Honkers, which was scheduled for Monday night, has been postponed to tomorrow due to the rain.
