Reversing the decline of the moose numbers in Manitoba

Ontario is not the only jurisdiction dealing with declines in moose population.

Outdoor columnist Gord Ellis looks at how Manitoba is dealing with a decease in moose population

(Justin Hoffman)

Ontario is not the only jurisdiction dealing with a decliningmoose population.

Starting next fall, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is proposing a two-week resident and non-resident open season for calves.

Outside of that two-week period, only adult moose can be hunted.

In the state of Minnesota, the moose hunt was actually cancelled.

A moose biologist in Manitoba saidthat province's herd faces many of the problems Ontario is now dealing with.

The problem is so acute in some areas the government has invoked total or partial hunting closures.

Our Outdoor columnist Gord Ellis spoke with CBC Superior Morning host, Lisa Laco, about the measures Manitoba has taken to stop the decline in moose populations.
