Sanatorium residents should be recognized, advocate says

Efforts to recognize the former Fort William Indian Hospital Sanatorium as a residential schoolhave caught the attention of a former federal candidate in Kenora.

Tania Cameron said she plans to put the issue on the political radar.

Cameron recently discovered several of her family members were sent to the sanatorium, and added she'll lobby some of her colleagues when she attends the upcoming NDP leadership convention as a delegate.

"[Im] going to use [the convention] to talk to [the] Aboriginal Affairs critic with the northern MPs here in northern Ontario and get their support," Cameron said. "I will contact anyone that I need to contact."

Cameron said she also plans to meet with Treaty 3 and other First Nations organizations to build support.
