OPP clears scene of incident involving 'explosive ordnance' in Schreiber

Ontario Provincial Police have cleared an area in the Township of Schreiber where police wereinvestigating an incident involving "explosive ordnance" on Ontario Street.

Ontario Provincial Police have cleared an area in Schreiber where police wereinvestigating an incident involving "explosive ordnance" on Ontario Street.

"Residents are now able to return to their homes. The Township of Schreiber would like to thank everyone for their co-operation and understanding during this event," saidTammy Ibey, the township's director of operations, in an emailed statement shortly before 3:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

The northwestern Ontario township issued an emergency alert shortly before noon on Wednesday,askingresidents and businesses to evacuate the following areas:

  • Erie Street.
  • Ontario Street.
  • Manitoba Street.
  • Quebec Street.
  • Winnipeg Street around the east end of Ontario Street.

An increased police presence was expected for the afternoon.

On its social media, OPP saidofficers wereinvestigating and askedresidents to stay away while officers worked.

Schreiber's recreation centre wasopened for anyone needing shelter until the incident was resolved.
