Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says it has charged a Thunder Bay police officer with assault causing bodily harm in connection with an incident last summer.

The charge comes after a man, 30, was seriously injured on June 30, 2023 in Thunder Bay, the SIU said in a news release on Tuesday.

The SIU said in the release that its director Joseph Martinohas "reasonable grounds" to believe that the Thunder Bay Police Service officercommitted a crime in relation to the man's injuries.

Const. Marshall Moore is charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm, the SIU said. He is due to appear in an Ontario Court of Justice courtroom in Thunder Bay on Aug. 16.

"As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation," the SIU said in the release.

No other details were released.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates the conduct of police officers in incidents that may have resulted in death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearmor allegations of sexual assault.
