Last-minute vacation turns into rescue mission

A Manitoba truck driver who had only recently taken CPR training says he's grateful it saved a little boy's life in Kenora, Ont.

Dave Redl, 26, said he took a spur-of-the moment trip to Kenora over the holiday weekend, but when he and his friends went to the beach, he found himself in the middle of an emergency.

A three-year-old child had been found unconscious in the water off Anicinabe Beach.

"It felt like hours, but I was told it was only about five to 10 minutes before we got the little boy revived," Redl said.

"Honestly, in a situation like that, nothing goes through your head except you need to get this little boy going and every step that you're taught through your first aid classes is beating you in the back of the head, showing you what to do."

Redl said he's glad he was able to give a child a second chance at life.

"There is no better feeling in the world," Redl added. "You will never get a feeling more greater than saving someone else's life."

Redl says he's just a typical guy who was in the right place at the right time.
