City to request destruction of dog that bit boy

The Thunder Bay district health unit has issued an order to quarantine the dog that attacked an 11-year-old boy on Saturday.

The city of Thunder Bay's licensing and enforcement department plans to go to court to ask that the dog that attacked an 11 year old boy on the weekend be put down.

The boxer bit the child on the face, resulting in injuries that required 65 stitches.

Manager of licensing and enforcementRon Bourretsaid his department will ask a judge to order the dog's destruction.

Bourret also said several charges are pending against the animal's owner under the Dog Owner's Liability Act, includingcharges of failure to leash and licence all his dogs.

The court will be asked to order substantial fines, Bourret added.

Thunder Bay police have already charged the 56 year old man with Criminal Negligence Causing Bodily Harm in connection with the incident at Tarbutt Park on Sunday. He appears in court next month.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unithas placed the dog in quarantine.
