Humane Society working to solve recent cat abandonment, hording cases

The head of the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society says investigators continue to work on a pair of open cases involving cats.

In June, 23 cats were found abandoned in a dog crate in Wilson Street Park in Thunder Bay.

Shortly after, 46 more were removed from a home on Secord Street, located on the city's north side.

Melanie Blanchette, the executive director of the Thunder Bay humane society, said there's no proven link between the two cases yet.

And while investigators are still working to determine who left the cats in the dog crate, charges are being pursued in the Secord Street case.

"The 46 that were removed from the hoarding situation onSecordare still within our care and those are thecharges that we're looking at pressing," Blanchette said. "If we can prove through the investigation that those two are linked, well then we'll obviously have more charges on our hands."

Some of the 23 cats found in the dog crate have been sent to southern Ontario through the OSPCA, as thetwo cases left the local humane society overcrowded.

Investigators are also trying to determine who dumped 15 rabbits at the Mission Island Marsh on the weekend.
