Thunder Bay collision shears off utility pole, injures driver

Thunder Bay police have charged a 68-year-old driver with a red light offence after an incident in which an utility pole was sheared off, and traffic in the city was tied up for over an hour.

Thunder Bay police say traffic in the city was interrupted for a little over an hour, aftera driver suffered minor injuriesand a utility pole was sheared off in a collisionon Red River Road at Clarkson Street at around 9:30 a.m.Monday.

An eastbound Toyota pick-up truck was proceeding through the intersection on a green light when a north-bound Nissan sedan going through on a red light met the back end of the truck, police said.

The 68-year-old female driver of the Nissan sustained minor injuries.

Shewas escorted by ambulance to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Police subsequently charged her with a red light violation.

The 56-year-old male driver of the pick-up truck was unharmed.

Both vehicles sustained substantial damage.
