Police in Thunder Bay, Ont., say a 25-year-old man is in critical condition after being found "unresponsive" on a recreation trail on the city's north side early Sunday morning.

According to a written release issued Monday, police said Marlan Patrick Chookomolin was taken to hospital after he was found just after midnight on June 25.

Police said he was located on a pathway that runs parallel to the Thunder Bay Expressway, just north of Dawson Road. A trail in the area continues behind the Landmark Inn into the County Park neighbourhood.

The area around that part of the city's trail network has been the scene of other reported violent incidents, including the 2010 death of a teenage girl, sparking the city to take some measures, including upgrading lighting.

On Monday, police said investigators are looking to speak with anyone who saw Chookomolin in the evening hours of June 24 in order to establish a timeline of where he was leading up to when he was found on the trail.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
