Thunder Bay police gun, ammunition still not found

Thunder Bay Police Service say they have found the backpack that was stolen from an officer's personal vehicle on Saturday night, or early Sunday morning, but the handgun and ammunition are still missing.

Thunder Bay PoliceService say they havefound the backpack thatwas stolen from anofficer's personal vehicle onSaturday night, or early Sunday morning, but the handgun and ammunition arestill missing.

The backpack was discoveredSundayafternoon by police during a search of the Green Acres area in the city's south side, police reported Tuesday in a written release.

Police said the backpackwas found within the500 block of Brown Street in Thunder Bay.

Evidence was recovered andis being examined by the service's Forensic Identification Unit, police stated.

The circumstances surrounding the Glockmodel 26 along with 3 magazines being in the officer's personal vehicle is under investigation, police added.

The officer has been placed on administrative duties.

In a statement, police reiterated "this weapon needs to be safely secured and recovered ... Please help in getting this gun off the street."
