Thunder Bay police recover stolen firearm

A stolen police-issued Glock 26 has been returned to Thunder Bay police.

Thunder Bay police say astolen police-issuedGlock 26 has been recovered.

In a written release, Thunder Bay police said the firearm, along with one magazine of ammunition was turned into a local attorney's office Wednesday afternoon. Police were then notified of the returned firearm.

Two magazines of ammunition remain missing, police said.

The gun went missing on Saturday night, after a backpackwas taken from an officer's personal vehicle. The bag was found by city police on Sunday.

The officer who was responsible for the firearm has been placed on administrative duty. The Ontario Provincial Police will conduct an investigation looking into why the gun, along with ammunition, was in the officer's personal vehicle.

In a media release, the Thunder Bay Police Service said it was grateful for the support of the public and themedia, and that the return of the firearm is "a significant accomplishment in the interest of public safety."
