A 56-year-old man is facing a second-degree murder charge after a person was stabbed in Newmarket this week, York Regional Police say.

Officers were first called to check in on a person's welfare at an apartment building in the area of Timothy Street and Prospect Street around 8:50 a.m. Monday, police said in a news release.

Responding officers found a man who had been stabbed when they arrived, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, investigators say.

The victim's identity has yet to have been confirmed by the coroner's office, according to police.

A 56-year-old man of no fixed address has been charged with second-degree murder.

"As the accused and the victim were known to each other, this is being treated as an isolated incident," the news release reads.

Investigators are asking any witnesses who have yet to speak with police and anyone with security camera footage from the area to contact them.
