Authorities removed 28 dogs, 10 rabbits and one cat from an alleged puppy mill in Milton last Friday after it was reported the animals were living outside without shelter or water.

There was a litter of weeks-old puppies, four pregnant females at full term and two dead animals on the property.

OSPCA agents from the Oakville & Milton Humane Society, veterinarians and the Halton Regional Police went to the alleged mill at Trafalagar Road and Highway 401 with a warrant on Feb. 13.

The dogs, mostly beagles, were found living outside with inadequate shelter and frozen water in their bowls.

The rabbits were housed in similar conditions for the cold weather.

The litter of puppies and their mother were taken to a veterinary hospital for immediate attention.

"These poor dogs and rabbits were living outside without proper shelter during one of the coldest winters we have had. Now they are safe and warm under our loving care," said Kim Millan, the executive director of the Oakville & Milton Humane Society.

Charges may be pending.
