Police say there are reports of a bear roaming in a community about 50 kilometres north of Toronto.

York Regional Police say they received a call about a black bear in a backyard in Newmarket, Ont., on Sunday morning.

A spokeswoman said officers responding to the call were unable to locate the animal.

Resident Adam Carter spotted the bear in his yard and filmed it roaming around his house.

"My God, there's a bear in my backyard," he says as he begins recording.

The spokeswoman said there were reports of a bear in another area of Newmarket on Saturday.

Police are warning people to not approach the bear and call York Regional Police (1-866-876-5423) if they see it. Local residents are also advised to bring pets and food inside and to not feed the animal.
