Analysts predict Boxing Day activity could take a backseat to that of Black Friday.

Shoppers were out in force on Friday, looking to make the most of Boxing Day sales at malls and stores around Toronto. But some retail analysts predict Canada's traditional shopping blitz could this year, for the first time, take a back seat to Black Friday.

The mostly U.S. shopping phenomenon and its online component Cyber Monday are catching on, says Prof. David Soberman, who teaches marketing at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

"A lot of the items one might think of buying on Boxing Day are also highlighted in those sales," Soberman told CBC News. "So if people have bought in that selling period, they might not be customers in the Boxing Day period."
